Essential oils continue to gain popularity for their beneficial effects on the mind, body, and spirit. As we know, labor and childbirth very much involve all three of those components. Essential oils can be very helpful in making your environment more comfortable, alleviating adverse symptoms, providing a boost of energy, or even helping labor progress. For that reason, I always bring a few key oils to my clients' births. Even if you do not have a doula, these are great to consider buying for your labor and delivery journey! These are the top five essential oils I always have in my doula bag:

1. Lavender- Lavender is one of the most widely used essential oils in labor, which is why many hospitals have it on hand. It is not only great for relaxation but has also been proven as a pain relief method. One study found that folks using lavender essential oil during their labor reported lower levels of pain than those who did not use it.

2. Peppermint-It is very common to experience nausea and vomiting during childbirth. Peppermint essential oil (and peppermint tea) are great at calming the tummy and relieving any queasiness.

3. Lemon- Birthing is hard work. It is normal to become exhausted, especially in the event of long labors. This essential oil is great for when you need a quick boost of energy. For example, right before pushing!

4. Orange- For some, the unknowns of labor can be stress-provoking. Because reducing anxiety in labor can lead to a more positive experience for both birther and baby, my goal is to ensure that those laboring experience as little stress as possible. A study evaluating the benefits of diffused orange essential oil was found to lower anxiety in labor.

5. Clary Sage- This earthy-toned scent is used for promoting relaxation and uterine contractions during labor. Many have found clary sage to be very effective in increasing the strength and frequency of contractions, so avoid using this oil before you are considered full term.

How to use essential oils:

Place a few drops in one tablespoon of carrier oil and use it for massage.

Dilute in carrier oil and place onto acupressure points (pictured below).

Place a few drops on a flannel cloth and place it under your pillow.

Place 3-5 drops in your favorite diffuser (here's mine).

Gently waft the scent straight from the bottle.

Ensure that your oils are 100% therapeutic grade before using them, and always use a carrier oil when placing essential oils directly onto your skin. Carrier oils include coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, etc.
