Keeping a positive mindset is a major asset during labor and childbirth. One way to keep a productive outlook is to practice positive affirmations. Positive affirmations are a simple yet effective task that can boost your confidence and self-esteem! These affirmations are essentially short phrases of positive self-talk that you can repeat to yourself. You can also share them with your birth partner and they can say them to you during labor.

They work to build your self-confidence and help you tune into your natural ability to birth, and can also help reframe any negative thoughts or feelings you may have regarding childbirth. For example, if you are feeling overwhelmed by the discomfort of a surge (contraction), you can say to yourself: "I am powerful and focused" or "I can do anything for sixty seconds." Trust in yourself and believe what you are saying or hearing!

Here are some of my favorite positive affirmations for labor:

  • My body made this contraction, so my body can handle it

  • I am doing everything I can

  • My baby is on my team

  • I trust in my body

  • I breathe slowly and relax through each surge

  • Every surge is one closer to meeting my baby

  • I am safe, supported, and surrounded by love

  • My body was made to give birth

  • People around the world are laboring with me

  • I can do anything for sixty seconds

  • I am prepared and informed

  • I am capable and strong

  • I am doing an amazing job

  • This will not last forever

  • I am ready to meet my baby

  • I am exactly where I need to be

  • I feel the joy of birth

  • I am resilient

  • I am open to whatever experience brings me to my baby
